Why we’re asking you to Love Your Clothes for Cardiff Fashion Week – guest blog
How much do you love your clothes? As you’re here on the Cardiff Fashion Week website the answer is probably quite a lot. But how much do you really love them? That’s the question we are posing for Love Your Clothes Cardiff, 24 – 29 October, in conjunction with Cardiff Fashion Week.
As Cardiff celebrates the very best in Welsh fashion design and retail, our Love Your Clothes campaign is encouraging all fashion-lovers to give each item of clothing you own some extra love.
Why? Because every year we throw an estimated £140 million worth of used clothing away – that’s around 350,000 tonnes of clothing unnecessarily making its way to landfill in the UK. And in the average UK household, nearly a third of clothes haven’t been worn in the last year – that’s wearable clothing worth over £30 billion in total hiding at the back of our wardrobes.
How can you help? By extending the life of your clothing through care and repair, giving it a new lease of life through up-cycling or refashioning, finding it a new loving home through swapping or donating, and keeping all clothing out of the bin!
We are delighted to be collaborating with Cardiff Fashion Week to put on a week of fun free family-friendly fashion activities for Love Your Clothes Cardiff. With all eyes focused on local talent and the latest trends it is a great opportunity to get our message out there and encourage you to think about the life of your clothes.
Our website is always full of hints and tips to get you started, and now it is bursting at the seams with FREE events you can try your hand at as part of Love Your Clothes Cardiff.
We are really excited to be part of Cardiff Fashion Week’s Designer Village in the Masonic Hall on Saturday 29 October, where here we hope you’ll be inspired by Super Crafters Julia and Sarah from The Sustainable Studio. You can discover how to re-create the latest trends, re-fashion and accessorise a pre-loved shirt, and pick up some quick fashion-fixes in their free Sustainable Fashion Masterclasses.
The Castle Emporium will be our home for a special Sewathon on Wednesday 26 October. If you want to help shape the look of the festival season, sign up to join us and refashion, stitch, embroider, embellish, and transform jeans into must-have shorts to be sold on Oxfam stalls at Glastonbury, Bestival, Boomtown and Womad.
With the help of our Super Crafters you can also learn how to re-fashion your wardrobe with lots of different upcycling workshops throughout the week. There might also be some fashion-finds to be had at our free Love Your Clothes Swap Shop at the end of the week.
If you love your clothes now, we hope you’ll REALLY love them after Love Your Clothes has come to the city for Cardiff Fashion Week. And we hope you will continue to love them and get the most out of their life.
